How to Measure a Replacement Spring
Overview: How to Find the Right Spring Size for a Self Storage Roll-Up Door
When ordering torsion springs, there are four specific items you will need to know in order to get the correct replacement spring:
- Wire Size
- Inside Diameter of the spring
- Length of the spring
- Wind of the spring (right or left wound)
How to Measure the Wire Size of a Torsion Spring
The best way to determine the wire size of your spring is to measure the length of ten or twenty coils to the nearest one-sixteenth of an inch, and refer to the Spring Wire Chart.
How to Measure the Inner Diameter of a Torsion Spring
The inside diameter is the distance across the inside of the spring. Measure the inside diameter to the nearest one-sixteenth of an inch.
How to Find the Length of a Spring
The spring must be tightly compressed with no gaps. If distorted or broken, lay the pieces together to get the overall length, or count the total number of coils and multiply by the wire size. The final size of the spring you receive may vary by plus or minus one coil width.
You can also use the Spring Wire Chart to convert the length of coils into the wire size without doing the math. As an example, say your 20 coils of spring measure 5 inches in length. Find 5 inches on the chart, slide right, and you will see your wire size is .250 (you would select .2500 on the website).
How to Determine the Wind Direction
Spring wind refers to the direction the spring’s wire is coiled. It determines how the spring unwinds as the door moves. If the incorrect wind type is installed, the door will not function properly.
Look at the end of the spring with the hooks, as shown in the image. Does it rotate to the right or left as it winds away from you? Right-hand springs wind clockwise. Left-hand springs wind counterclockwise.
How to Determine the Spring End Type
Compare your spring ends to the images on this page to determine the end type.
