When installing a cylinder latch with a backplate, insert the cylinder lock before tightening the backplate. This prevents misalignment, which can block part of the opening and create the illusion of a defective latch. The bolt holes allow a small amount of shift until tightened, and securing the backplate with the lock in place ensures proper alignment. 
The red lines mark the edge of the backplate opening. This image shows how a misaligned backplate can obstruct the lock. The image on the left is properly aligned, while the image on the right has been misaligned.
