1. Doors are faded, chalky or have lost their shine

If your doors have a faded, chalky appearance, or rubbing your hand along the surface coats your hand with a powdery chalk-like coating, your door paint is oxidizing. Simply put the paint is breaking down due to ultraviolet exposure and chemical reaction with pollutants.

If you are not down to bare metal, and wetting the door makes the color look bright (until it dries again) then you may be able to restore the gloss, shine and like-new appearance of your door with our Door Restore UV resistant ultra-clear coating.

2. What is Chalking?


Chalking
 - 
refers to paint that has begun to oxidize. While you can power wash this layer off, each time you do you are actually removing another layer of paint. Eventually you will end up with bare spots and need to repaint the door. This can be prevented by applying Door Restore Ultra Clear which protects and restores the existing paint to a like new finish, increasing the durability and reducing the need for re-painting.

3. Should I Clean My Roll-Up Doors?
Washing self storage doors is common sense from a curb appeal perspective. Your doors represent you business and send a message to prospective customers about the quality of your facility.
 
What you may not have considered is the effect dirty doors may have on the frequency of repainting.
 
While UV radiation is the primary cause of fading and chalking paint, the ‘dirt’ on your door is actually composed of things like abrasive grits, salts, chemical pollutants and organic materials which can all contribute to a premature weathering of your door.

• Grit particles can create surface dulling micro abrasions as the doors are raised and lowered. This makes your door’s coating more porous allowing further penetration. Your door's outer coating is like a shield protecting the color pigment and beneath that the actual metal surface. Poke enough holes in a shield and your proection is gone.
• Salts on the door are corrosive and will degrade paint over time. They also tend to expand and contract with moisture in the air which may further stress the door’s coatings as they get into scratches and micro abrasions.
• Pollutants on the door’s surface can degrade the door coating chemically.
• Salts and other pollutants may also get ‘baked’ into the paint by the sun resulting in a rough stippled surface especially on top of the door ribs (corrugation). In many cases this cannot be removed -certainly not without damaging the coating - and must be stripped or painted over.

This is happening to your door now - even if you can’t see it!

The net effect is that over time a dirty door’s surface will break down much faster than one that is regularly maintained.
4. How do you remove chalking paint from the door?

Chalk is oxidized paint. The binders that hold the pigments and other paint components together are broken down by UV radiation. While small amounts of chalking can be cleaned by scrubbing with an soft RV-style scrub brush and gentle detergent there is a fair mount of 'elbow grease' required to remove it. Heavier amounts of chalk are almost impossible to remove via scrubbing alone and may further degrade the doors surface.

Zap-It Chalk & Grimer Buster was created especially for removing chalking and embedded grime. It can be used to clean light layers of chalk off the door or to prepare the door for clear coating.

If the paint is heavily oxidized, cleaning off the chalk may expose the metal surface requiring repainting. If in doubt you may want to test it on a single door.

Tip: Apply Door Restore Ultimate or Door Restore Express on average every 5-6 years (varies from 3 to 9 years depending on your local conditions and exposure). This offers protection from UV rays and will keep your door's color layer from oxidizing- the clear coat will oxidize and scratch first reducing or even eliminating the need for facility-wide repainting.



5. Does clear coating protect my door?

Yes it does. When you apply a clear coating like Door Restore Ultimate or Door Restore Express to your door you are not only restoring the shine and brightening the color to give it a 'like new' look. You are adding a shield that will protect your doors color layer from UV radiation and even some small scratches and micro abrasions.

It is much cheaper to protect your doors than repaint, repair or even replace them.
